From Fear to freedom
Waking to the song of the orange legged birds outside my window, I didn't know that soon I would find one lying on her back on my balcony. After I got myself out of bed, I saw her there, frozen, motionless with her little legs sticking straight up into the air. If I was still in Colorado, I would just call the wild life preservation/ rehabilitation organization and they'd soon be over to assess the situation and take her in for rehab.
No such group here.
So I went to my most dependable consultant, YouTube. Upon its advise I began to build a "Safe House" where she could rest as she recovered from the possible trauma of flying into into my window. YouTube said I should make it from a shoe box but I no longer have such a thing. I did have a box from an Amazon shipment although it was smaller than the suggested shoe box. I tried to adapt it by adding an A frame roof. So with some strips of paper towel and a bottle cap of water inside, I was ready to put her into my mini recovery capsule. I read on YouTube to not use a towel to pick up the bird due to the possibility of a talon getting caught in the towel's fibers. I erroneously disregarded that advise as I thought the weave in the towel was tight enough not to cause a problem. I slowly approached the still frozen looking bird carefully wrapping it in the dishtowel and moving her into the box. However one of her talons did get caught in one of the towel's fibers. She fluttered frantically as she quickly set herself free and flew away.
So perhaps, just sometimes, even fear can become a catalyst for freedom.

I haven't written much as things are moving quickly here as my true landing spot is soon to be a reality. 3 hours south of here. After the first I'll be there and then 'llI catch up,
